FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE [1-02]
The NATCA Charitable Foundation (NCF) efforts span more than just the holiday season; we work tirelessly year round in fundraising and community service. Through a huge display of generosity from controllers and businesses, the charity continues to grow and succeed in helping the less fortunate in the name of our union. This year NCF was once again glad to assist our communities by adopting families in four cities. This is our sixth year to partake in our "adopt-a-family" holiday program in the Dallas/Fort Worth, Texas area, our third in the Houston, Texas area and our first in Atlanta, Georgia and Jacksonville, Florida. Needy families from DFW, Houston, Atlanta and Jacksonville are screened through local schools and social services. Each year we have been fortunate enough to include more families and individuals in our desire to make the holidays a happier time for those that are struggling within our respective communities. This year three of the families chosen suffered losses in a fire. After organizing our volunteers in the four cities, we then separate the tasks of shopping, wrapping and delivery. Items were both purchased from and donated by local merchants. Items included clothing, shoes, toys, electronics, over-the-counter medicine, vitamins, toothpaste/brushes, dental floss and essentials for the home to name a few. Additionally, employees at Atlanta ARTCC and Jacksonville ARTCC participated in a food drive to assist their families. Delivery is of course the best, to see the hopeful and happy eyes of the children and to take in the warm wishes and gracious thanks from the adults. Seeing the smiling faces and knowing first hand what a difference we truly can make in the lives of others make it extremely fulfilling. In addition to the "Adopted Family" Program, $1500 was spent on the purchase of over-the-counter medications, vitamins, towels and clothes which were donated to the Star of Hope Homeless Shelter in Houston. The NATCA Charitable Foundation at Houston ARTCC is continuing a blanket/coat drive through February. Thus far 13 large bags of blankets, coats, gloves and hats have been delivered to the Star of Hope Shelter. It is always difficult to take the time away from hectic work and family schedules. However, it only takes volunteering just one time to get immediately devoted to the wonderful cause of helping others. "Give what you can. To someone it may be better than you dare to think."---Longfellow
